Oppermann London Relaunches with New Retail Concept

Relaunching with a new concept, the men’s accessories brand Oppermann cuts out the expensive middlemen to offer luxurious leather goods at a fraction of the traditional retail price.

When brothers Mattis and Niklas Oppermann launched their brand in 2012, they sought to create leather goods of the highest quality with a minimalist and understated aesthetic.

In the following year, like many designer brands, they built a network of retailers and started to grow at a steady rate.

However, they were not happy with many of their retailers drastically marking up the prices of their bags before selling them to the customer.

Due to this particular pet hate they were determined to offer great quality products without overcharging the customer, they decided to take a leap of faith and avoid retailers altogether. They now distribute their products exclusively through their own website at the best price.

Each product is handmade in Italy, with carefully selected vegetable-tanned leathers from tanneries in both Sweden and Italy. Every component is also sourced from renowned manufacturers in Europe.

In traditional high street stores, a similar briefcase would cost around £1000. Thanks to their new business model, they are able to offer their large Bolton briefcase for just £295.

At this season's 'London Collections: Men' in June 2014, Oppermann presented its latest development with a ‘Core Collection’, in addition to a new line of bags titled ‘Surfaces’.

With a combination of soft tumbled leather from Tärnsjö Garveri in Sweden and smooth trim leather from Artigiano del Cuoio in Italy, ‘Surfaces’ plays on the contrast of different textures and layering of two different leathers.

Particular MWS favourite recent releases include The Hanbury, an elegant weekend bag, and the Bolton, a slightly larger than the average briefcase.

To launch their new concept and collections, Oppermann is currently taking pre-orders through a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter - be sure to see the video below for more information.
