Trend Report: Check Mate!

Many trends come and go, breezing into our lives, lauding themselves over us and then disappearing as quickly as they arrived; usually with us looking back on them with a certain level of disgust and embarrassment. Checks, however, are a trend in no rush to leave our lives. In fact, they are more a staple than a trend.

Spanning the wardrobe genre, they can feature in shirts, suits, trousers, coats, hell even your socks! When something can be subtlety introduced or overstated to the max and still influence your outfit in a great way, surely that is testament enough to a timeless trend.

Moss Bros have a plethora of examples in their collection to choose from, and and here are a few of my top picks, for classic, subtle and statement checks. Inspired by the grid-like construction of urban life, the SS15 launch collections by Moss Bros are centred around the dominance of checks in every shape and form.

This slim fit grey check suit is multipurpose. A stormy grey check suit, with a beautifully subtle light blue hue running through it. It's perfect for business meetings or formal occasions alike, or it could be just at home as a one piece, pairing the smart trousers with a casual shirt for a less formal look, or for the more daring among us... sockless with smart trainers for that newest of trends - the sport-luxe look.

The Moss Esq. regular fit check classic blue suit, again with a subtle check pattern and contrasting lining. A suit of this style should be a staple in every gents wardrobe, in fact, THIS suit should be in every gents wardrobe. I personally wear blue suits more than anything else, paired with tan shoes and a lovely silk tie. It is a timeless look and one, I feel, is a little less intimidating than the more formal black suit. The check in this suit is subtle enough to not look brash but apparent enough to stand out from the crowd. A definite favourite of mine.

Finally, for the more daring, is this bold check slim fit blue number. Almost tartan, the standout check is definitely statement making. Single breasted with peak lapel it is classic with the dark and royal blue tartan - a middle finger to conformity. Wonderful as a suit, extraordinary as a jacket, exemplary as a statement trouser. The epitome of multi-talented.
