Keeping Your New Smile in Tip-Top Condition

Cosmetic dentistry is a billion-dollar global business. Already worth $25 billion in 2023, it’s forecasted to hit an enormous $54 billion by 2033. Advancements in dental technology, coupled with the increasing influence of social media (smile please!) are leading to millions of people seeking out innovative treatments to improve their appearance. But it can be an expensive business, particularly in the UK, and the NHS simply isn’t an option for anything other than the most basic procedures. That’s why so many Britons are heading abroad, and with its world-class dental clinics, Turkey has become a leading destination. But if you’re thinking about booking a flight, understanding post-procedure care is essential to get the absolute best results and a quick recovery. Here’s the lowdown.

Why Turkey?

There are many compelling reasons to take a trip to Turkey for cosmetic dentistry. Firstly, and of course most importantly, the care and facilities are second to none. Turkish dental clinics are highly esteemed for their excellent standards of care, with dentists being highly trained and qualified. Clinics like Smile Dental Turkey are equipped with the very latest technology and adhere to the most stringent hygiene standards. And while you won’t be compromising on quality, costs are significantly lower than in the UK, sometimes by as much as 70%. You’ll find all the range of treatments you’d get here, and with many clinics offering airport transfers and even accommodation, there are a comprehensive range of packages. Overall, it’s no surprise so many of us are heading to Turkey!

Post-Procedure Care: What You Need to Know

Dentistry has evolved rapidly in the last few years, with technology and other advancements leading to better outcomes with less pain. But as with any medical procedure, there are steps you need to take after the treatment to make sure you recover as quickly and painlessly as you can, while getting the best possible final result. And as you’re going to be over 2,000 miles away from your dentist, this is even more important. Of course, the level of care needed depends on the type of treatment received. Let’s start with an easy one!

Teeth Whitening

We all want a bright, Hollywood-style smile, and the over-the-counter products available here usually don’t cut the mustard. And many of the products contain some pretty grim bleaching ingredients! So, it’s no wonder that professional teeth whitening in Turkey is so popular. Turkish dental clinics use a laser whitening process that’s extremely effective and non-invasive.

Post-Procedure

Recovery time is minimal. However, you should expect some mild to moderate tooth and gum sensitivity initially, so be sure to avoid very hot or cold drinks. You’ll also need to avoid food and drinks that can stain teeth, so coffee, tea and wine should be given a wide berth for at least two days. After that point, best results can be maintained by using a whitening toothpaste twice daily. And floss between the teeth regularly to remove plaque and gunk that can cause staining.

Dental Implants

A biggie! Dental implants are used to replace missing or heavily decayed teeth that are beyond saving. These artificial tooth roots are placed surgically into the jawbone, and after a recovery period, replacement teeth are placed onto the implants. It can be a major surgical procedure involving multiple visits to the dentist, and the initial healing period can last a couple of weeks. Expect mild discomfort, swelling and some bruising. The complete procedure can take anything from 3-9 months. Pain management with painkillers and anti-inflammatories will help, and maintaining ongoing good oral hygiene is a must. Brush gently in and around the surgical area and an antiseptic mouthwash is a wise move to prevent infection.

Veneers

Another popular option, dental veneers are thin porcelain shells that are bonded to your actual teeth. They’re commonly used to improve the look of teeth and work on a host of issues; discolouration, misaligned teeth, chips, gaps, and irregular shapes to name a few. A wonderful way to get an amazing smile. Great Turkish dental clinics use porcelain – not only natural looking but can last up to decade with good care.

Post-Procedure

After the veneers are fitted, you should expect to wait around 3-5 days for them to bond, and you’ll need a follow-up visit to the dentist to make sure all is well. Like teeth whitening, some level of tooth sensitivity is likely, but these should subside within a few days. To nail down best results, maintain great oral hygiene and as much as possible, avoid biting down on hard foods like nuts or sweets with the veneers. This will lessen the chance of chipping them.

General Rules of The Game

These are just three of the wide range of procedures available in Turkish dental clinics. Whatever treatment you opt for, there are some basic rules you should follow after you return home.

Pain Management

Some level of discomfort or sensitivity is par for the course. Listen to your body through your recovery. Over the counter or prescribed medication will help. Your Turkish dentist will be able to advise you.

Smoking & Alcohol

These can both slow healing and can stain dental work, so cut down your intake, or even better, stop completely!

Diet

Switch to a diet of soft foods post-procedure and look to gradually add in harder items as recovery progresses. Sugary foods and drinks should be reduced both in the short term and long term.

Follow-Up Appointments

Maintain regular communication with your chosen Turkish dental clinic. They’ll continue to offer support and advice even if you don’t need to make a return visit. It is often possible to arrange follow-up care with your local dentist. If so, make sure you have the full records of your procedure to hand, so any post-procedure care is seamless.
